There’s something about this moment that I don’t think I’ll ever be able to fully explain. That 12-year-old girl went to a Hilary Duff concert with her mom because she loved Hilary. She got a T-shirt, had an amazing night, and went home with a happy memory. She had absolutely no idea what life was going to ask of her in the years that followed. She didn’t know she’d eventually have to face cancer at 14. She didn’t know she’d have to face it again at 32. She didn’t know how much she would have to grow, fight, grieve, and become the woman she is today. But tonight, for a little while, I got to be that girl again. I wasn’t thinking about everything I’ve survived. I wasn’t worrying about the past or the future. I was just standing there a little ecstatic because Hilary Duff was wearing the same shirt as me. 💕 And maybe that’s why it felt so powerful. It wasn’t just nostalgia. It was this beautiful little bridge between the innocent 12-year-old girl who loved Hilary and the 34-year-old woman who has survived so much. And my mom was there again. Same girl. Same mom. Same Hilary. Same shirt. Twenty-two years later. Except this time, I understand just how precious that little moment really is. That little girl had no idea what was ahead of her. She didn’t know she’d have to become strong in ways she never should have had to. She didn’t know how much she would have to fight. She just knew she loved Hilary Duff and was excited to go her first concert with her mom. And somehow, after all of it, here I am—wearing that same shirt again, standing beside my mom, watching Hilary wear the same one.
