A southwest Ohio mother of two decided to enjoy the festivities on St. Patrick's Day in 2013. But little did her family know she would never come back home alive. Casey Pitzer went bar hopping with her friends and was given a ride home by two men: Michael Hartley and Brandon Reed, Hartley and Reed both claim that Pitzer suddenly opened the door during the ride, and ran into the darkness towards a retention pond where her body would be found a week later. When the autopsy reports came back, they showed that Pitzer had no signs of rape, strangulation, or assault. The report showed she had been intoxicated and that she drowned. To the police, the case was closed. But to the Pitzer family, this was nowhere near acceptable. The family had many questions: How was Casey able to get over the pond's barbed wire fence while intoxicated and without injury? Why were her clothes scattered around different areas of the pond? Greg Pitzer would sue the City of Wilmington to release his daughter's case files. While he won the case, what he found would destroy his confidence in anyone who touched his daughter's investigation. The coroner's report revealed that pathologists took samples from Pitzer's body that would be used for a sexual assault kit but Wilmington police never sent those to BCI for analysis. It was also revealed that the evidence was eventually destroyed. In 2018, a list of 2,000 items at the Wilmington Police Department that the property room manager put up for destruction. Among them, the coroner swabs from Pitzer's autopsy. Since this discovery, Greg Pitzer and the 4,000 people have signed an online petition to reopen Pitzer's case and see an unfinished investigation put to rest.
