@nickcooper.co: I think one reason Japan hits so many Americans so deeply is that, at least as a visitor, it can feel almost like the opposite of a culture built around constantly selling yourself. Here we’re taught to hustle, network, promote, upgrade, compete and somehow turn ourselves into a product. In Japan, I felt like I could just exist. Walk around. Notice things. Be curious. Be playful. Feel safe enough physically — and quiet enough mentally — that a part of me I hadn’t heard from in a while could come back out. Maybe that’s why Japan feels strangely nostalgic even while you’re still there. It doesn’t just show you another country. Sometimes it reminds you what you feel like when you stop performing. 🇯🇵 #Japan #JapanTravel #JapanCulture #LifePerspective #TravelThoughts

I used to see Japan like that too, especially when I stayed for short periods but when you see the Japanese culture from the inside and stop being a guest m, there’s soooo much pressure over you. It’s hard to adjust to Japanese culture and you are required to do it by very deeply ingrained social and cultural norms.

This is a tourist perspective. Its safe great public transport but saying you dont need to act a certain way in japan is crazy. Tatemae is real.

For me it’s the quiet. Even places that are super crowded never seem loud.

Yes but a lot of this only applies to tourists. If you’re living and working for a wage in Japan, money doesn’t go nearly as far. And truly the work culture there in the corporate world can be completely draining

You gotta get out of LA man. I also unconsciously assumed the rest of the US was similar to LA culturally. It’s not. Almost everywhere else is much more real.

This feeling is so hard to explain to someone who hasn’t been, but this might be the closest anyone’s gotten to explaining why we keep going back. 🇯🇵

Japan is just well put together and is for the people. Won't say it'd cheap because actually living there and getting paid by there money, it feels the same. USA is not for the people and not well put together.

I hate cities; Something about the crowds, the noise, and the bustle. However, I didn't mind Tokyo as much as I thought I would. It is still a city - and it definitely helps that it was a vacation - but I'd probably go back and visit it again.

Everything is performative in Japan if you really think about it, the etiquette, rules and confirm to the society

I’m Japanese and I’ve lived in both Japan and the U.S. for many years, so this is just my honest perspective.
Japan is a small island country with a relatively homogeneous society, and everyday life here is very safe, especially compared with the U.S. But safety is only one part of living in a country.
Also, I don’t know you personally, but as a Japanese person, I can say that being perceived as a white foreign man can give you a very different experience here than being Japanese and growing up within this society. That’s not criticism, it’s simply reality.
I’m genuinely happy that you love Japan. But visiting and actually building a life here can be very different. Every country has its own good and bad sides, and ultimately it comes down to what fits you personally.

You may need to dig a little deeper on the Japanese culture. I love visiting but having worked closely with a team in Japan, the hustle culture there is different but in some ways worse. You ask someone for something, they’ll stay up all night to deliver. They are perfectionists and are trained to do everything with hyper urgency. And there are many aspects that are very performative. It is all very interesting.
