Man, 64, tries to rob bank armed with a vape… A man who lost his job, home, and long-term partner has been jailed for two years after trying to rob a bank in Broadstairs, Kent, while armed with a vape. Gary Fishlock, a court heard, was having a "personal crisis" when he walked into the HSBC branch at Westwood Cross shopping centre on January 29 and handed over a note demanding money, while gesturing that he had a gun in his jacket pocket. While never showing the weapon, Fishlock kept his hand in his pocket throughout the robbery, pushing the vape – described as large and black – forwards to give the impression he was armed. Fishlock, a court heard, continued to pressure bank staff and demand money, while holding a carrier bag in his other hand. Despite this, the clerk managed to notify a colleague, hit her personal alarm and get into a back room. Police and security were notified and Fishlock, who eventually walked out empty-handed, was arrested. Canterbury Crown Court heard what was described as a fairly "melancholy tale", with Fishlock deciding he could either live on the streets or "put a roof over his head by doing what he did and incarcerate himself". His plan, regardless of whether he got money from the crime, was to be arrested. As well as jailing Fishlock, the judge ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the vape.
