Nearly 30 years later, can we let King Charles move on from Diana? One thing I have seen all day is “We were right about the King.” But who exactly is “we”? How many of those judging Charles knew him, knew Diana, or were there for the private conversations now being discussed? I wasn’t alive during their marriage, so I can only judge the King from what I have actually seen during my lifetime. Earl Spencer claims in his forthcoming memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, that Charles sounded “giddily elated — like a lottery winner” during a phone call following Diana’s death. But this is a recollection of a private conversation nearly 30 years ago. We don't have a recording, and none of us can know exactly what was said or how it was meant. I admire Diana enormously and wish I had been alive to witness her incredible work. But admiring Diana doesn't mean I have to dislike Charles. I can respect her legacy while respecting the King for the work I have watched him do. Imagine having your own divorce, arguments and private conversations dissected publicly for decades. Most people eventually get to move on; Charles and Diana never really had that luxury. I was excited about Spencer's book because I wanted to read about Diana — the woman, sister and mother, her work and the extraordinary legacy she left behind. Perhaps the full book will give us that, but the extracts so far have left me less enthusiastic. It feels as though the conversation is once again becoming about who said what 30 years ago rather than who Diana actually was. We may never know the complete truth about Charles and Diana's relationship, and perhaps some things should remain within a family. Nearly three decades later, surely we can celebrate Diana without continually using her memory as another reason to condemn Charles.
