KEMPTON PARK – Limpopo educator Abiud Prosper Baloyi has been recognised as the country’s top Physical Sciences educator at the 26th National Teaching Awards. Baloyi, who teaches Grades 10 to 12 at Mugwazeni Secondary School in Mugwazeni Village, Greater Tzaneen, was honoured for his dedication to learner achievement and his contribution to turning around the school’s academic performance. With eight years of experience teaching Physical Sciences, Baloyi goes beyond normal classroom hours, conducting extra lessons in the mornings, afternoons and Saturdays to help learners improve their understanding of the subject. His efforts have produced impressive results, with Mugwazeni Secondary School recording a 100% result with a distinction in Physical Sciences during the first term of 2026. Baloyi has also served as the school’s Grade 12 project manager since 2024. During his tenure, the school has reportedly moved from chronic underperformance to becoming a performing school. His contribution extends beyond Mugwazeni Secondary School. Baloyi chairs the Physical Sciences Professional Learning Community of the N'wanedzi circuit and serves as secretary of the teacher component of the School Governing Body. He is also the founder and manager of the Progressive Learning Science Academy, a community programme providing Physical Sciences extra classes to Grade 8 to 12 learners from the N'wanedzi and Xihoko circuits. The educator’s impact can also be seen among his former learners, with some now pursuing Bachelor of Education degrees and preparing to become Physical Sciences teachers themselves. Baloyi is further involved in community structures, including the Mugwazeni Development Committee. His national recognition came during the 26th National Teaching Awards ceremony at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre in Benoni on Thursday, 1 October 2026, where President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed educators and guests. The awards were held under the theme: “Uniting for Excellence: Elevating Achievement, Empowering Educators to Shape South Africa’s Future.” Baloyi’s achievement places a Limpopo educator at the top of the national Physical Sciences teaching category. 💬 What do you think about Baloyi’s contribution to Physical Sciences education and learner development? #VMNews #Limpopo #NationalTeachingAwards #PhysicalSciences #Education
