I think the thing that people need to remember is that while the public is hearing of this assault and it seems to be out of nowhere, the fact is, there will have been a pattern of abuse that has been escalating for years. It starts with coercive control, then it becomes emotional abuse, verbal abuse, and then it escalates to physical abuse. Maybe this is just the first time she has called Police. Maybe it’s that the kids are old enough now to have called Police. Maybe he has physically abused her before but never strangled her. Whatever happened, I have absolutely no doubt there has been a pattern of abuse that has been escalating over the years. I lived through it, I’ve watched as the same pattern emerged with my ex with the next partner. It always escalates.

my neighbours ex strangled me almost 3 years ago when I stepped in to protect her. he was refused bail for 3 weeks and was then out. he ended up getting a 12 month community bond with a conviction. it was a joke. my voice box is permanently damaged. 8 can't sing at all anymore, my voice is deeper. a lot of therapy. Sooo true my first instinct was to assume he was protecting his wife or kids and the violence was towards a male family member. It’s getting harder to trust the “good” guys.

I clerked for a Magistrate in the 90s. We had a close almost 'father/daughter' type of relationship. Later on, he was prosecuted and jailed for child SA. Obviously, I was devastated. But what really shocked me was how my friends from the courts were willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Because they did not want to believe that someone they knew could be guilty

I’ve also seen DV play out when I had Irish flatmates. It rarely starts with a physical attack. Usually it’s contempt/disrespect first, and then verbal abuse and then things get physical behind closed doors. When the physical attacks become more open and not caring what others might see, hear, or think, relationship has really deteriorated.

In the 90’s my dad was a champion for women’s development at his work at a national logistics company. The man’s rendition of ‘I Am Woman’ was legendary, he was Santa every year at Christmas and if there was face painting at an event he would encourage them to paint him as a fairy so he could state how he was comfortable in his manhood. What made him comfortable in that was the control and violence he would unleash on us at home. Believe women.

My friend lost her life last year to strangulation by the father of her 2 small children. He used this method the first time he hurt her and many other times after. Each time she passed out and then woke up. That’s why he used this method, because she always woke up. Well she didn’t wake up this last time and now her babies are without their mom.
