A remarkable story from Mount Athos has brought attention to the journey of a Chinese-born monk who has found his spiritual home in one of the most important centers of Orthodox Christianity. Monk Amphilochios was born in China and grew up in Australia. Today, he lives at the Xenophontos Monastery on Mount Athos, where he has embraced the daily life and responsibilities of an Orthodox monk. Speaking to the Greek television program Prime Time, Amphilochios described his life on the Holy Mountain with a sense of deep fulfillment. Asked about his role at the monastery, he explained that he serves as a church caretaker, preparing the church for services, tending to the oil lamps and helping with cleaning and maintenance. For Amphilochios, however, his life on Mount Athos is about far more than daily duties. He described it as the life he had always wanted. “It was everything I wanted in my life. I came here and fell in love with the place,” he said. He went on to describe Mount Athos as a place of prayer, faith and love, calling it an “angelic state.” The monk also spoke about the happiness he has found there, saying that he had never been as happy in his adult life as he is now, except when he was a young child. His story offers a striking example of the international reach of Orthodox monasticism. Despite being born thousands of kilometers away and growing up in Australia, Amphilochios ultimately chose the secluded spiritual life of Mount Athos and now considers the Holy Mountain his home. For him, the journey was not simply a change of country or lifestyle—it was the discovery of a place where he felt he truly belonged.
