As a female child and adult. I HAD to learn to not have meltdowns and Internazlied all my meltdowns which always leads to a shut down later.

And that probably explains why we intellectualize our emotions to prevent recurrence.

It legitimately feels like my body is being ripped apart when my emotions are high.

I had a meltdown in my GP surgery earlier this year. There was no understanding or support. I was thrown out and left sobbing on the grass. The. They removed me from their patient list. They do not care. If I was a teenage boy I’d get all the support in the world.

That helps explain something about my grandchild with autism that I couldn't understand. They are extremely tuned-in and compassionate to how others are feeling but they are completely unable to name their own emotions. This is fascinating.

They aren’t a choice but you can choose to go to a quiet place to calm down when you feel it coming on.

Genuine question/advice. I have ADHD and my partner was just diagnosed autistic. He thinks I have an attitude when I’m just talking normal. He also has meltdowns and lashes out verbally. It feels out of nowhere to me, but I know it isn’t for him. Eight years of this and I’m tired.
I know I have to be understanding of his autism even though he is not very understanding of my ADHD.
I can tell when I’m overwhelmed or when my RSD is triggered etc. I don’t know how to help him be that self-aware. It feels like I have a preteen in the house, not an adult. Any advice for this?

my kids school told me she was choosing to act out. I was like, absolutely fucking not friend. behaviour is communication. so what are you missing? where are you dropping the ball? where did you let her down to the point she was so dysregulated she had a meltdown? don't try that shit on with me 👀

Man, I wish there was a choice. I felt so dumb having a meltdown because my wife rattled off too many restaurant options on Door Dash at once.

My daughter’s old middle school refused to acknowledge her diagnoses ans treated her Autistic meltdown(going nonverbal) and shutdowns(flat out refusing to move) as behavioral problems, and she only made it through 10 full days her second semester due to panic attacks and overstimulation. She ended up in a 12 week virtual Intensive Outpatient Program to help get her back to some form of regulated emotions. Now we home school, which only was an option because I am a disabled former ELA teacher for 6-12th grade.

It absolutely isn’t a choice. I hate when I’m melting down after the fact, but there is nothing I can do about in the moment 😔

Also outside of meltdowns. I can feel the emotions in my body, I can tell you I feel like sh*t. But I have no idea what emotion is behind it. Do I feel like sh*t sad? Like sh*t hurt? Like sh*t alone? No idea🫠

I’m convinced neurotypical is the anomaly at this point because not feeling emotions doesn’t even make sense. So if this is true, how do other people receive the full scope of information that comes with emotions?
