Deadly Blessing (1981) Before *A Nightmare on Elm Street* made Wes Craven one of horror’s biggest names, he made this strange, atmospheric little film about isolation, religion and something sinister hiding in rural America. Maren Jensen plays Martha, a young woman living on an isolated farm with her husband, who has left the strict religious community he grew up in. When he dies under mysterious circumstances, Martha’s friends come to stay with her, but the deaths and disturbing events around the farm only continue. One of those friends is Lana, played by a very young **Sharon Stone**, years before *Total Recall* and *Basic Instinct*. This was one of Stone’s earliest substantial film roles. And if you remember *Deadly Blessing*, there’s a good chance you remember **that spider scene**. A spider drops directly into Stone’s mouth while she sleeps, and the scene became one of the film’s most notorious moments. According to accounts from the production, Stone was understandably reluctant to do it, and Craven first tried to reassure her by handling the spider himself. 🕷️ 🎬 There’s another great Wes Craven connection. The terrifying bathtub sequence involving a snake came from a dream Craven had. A few years later, he returned to a very similar idea in *A Nightmare on Elm Street*, replacing the snake with Freddy Krueger’s bladed glove. Ernest Borgnine is also memorable as Isaiah, the intimidating leader of the neighboring religious community. And underneath all of this is an early score by **James Horner**, years before *Aliens*, *Braveheart* and *Titanic*. *Deadly Blessing* can be messy, and not everything in its story works equally well. But the isolated farms, religious paranoia and slow sense that something is very wrong give it a creepy atmosphere that still holds up surprisingly well. You can already see pieces of the filmmaker Wes Craven was about to become. #WesCraven #SharonStone #80sHorror #HorrorMovies #80s #80sNostalgia #80smovies
