@baseballisweird: Every baseball fan has at least one. The prospect you were completely convinced was going to become a star. Maybe you saw one ridiculous highlight. Maybe you read way too many prospect rankings. Maybe you drafted him in every fantasy league. Maybe he had one hot month and you decided you had discovered the next superstar before everyone else. For me, one of those guys was Lastings Milledge. He was a huge prospect with the Mets, had all the hype, debuted at 21 years old and absolutely felt like one of those players who was going to be around forever. It never really happened. Milledge had some solid stretches, bounced from the Mets to the Nationals, Pirates and White Sox, and finished his Major League career with 33 home runs and a .269 average across 655 games. Not a bad career at all. Just very different from what it felt like he was going to become when he first showed up. That’s one of my favorite things about looking back at old baseball. You remember the hype almost as much as the actual career. There are so many guys who felt enormous for a year or two because every fan was waiting for the breakout that never quite came.
