Thousands of Roman shoes have survived in the waterlogged ground at Vindolanda, preserved because the low-oxygen conditions slowed the decay of the leather. The footwear ranges from sandals and slipper-like shoes to military boots and closed ankle shoes. Some soles were made from five or six layers of leather and secured with stitching, leather thongs and iron hobnails. Many were highly decorative, with cut-out patterns, scalloped edges, stamped insoles and hobnails arranged into shapes such as lozenges and tridents. One famous example, known as the Lepidina slipper, was stamped three times with the name of its maker, Lucius Aebutius Thales. The shoes also reveal who lived at Vindolanda. Footwear belonging to men, women, children and even infants has been found across the site, including areas once thought to have been occupied mainly by soldiers. Some even show unusual wear patterns and possible attempts to correct the way their owners walked. These shoes preserve far more than Roman fashion. They give us a direct glimpse into everyday life at Vindolanda nearly 2,000 years ago. #historicalfashion #RomanHistory #Archaeology #historylovers #AncientRome
