Most people know that genetics can stack the deck against you. But what if another gene could neutralize the risk? In this conversation, Dr. Pinchas Cohen explains the science behind a molecule called humanin — and what it may mean for one of the most feared diseases of aging. APOE4 is the most well-known genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. Carrying it meaningfully raises your odds. But as Dr. Cohen describes, humanin appears to bind directly to APOE4 and neutralize its negative effects. And people who carry a specific humanin variant seem to be remarkably resistant to Alzheimer's — even when APOE4 is present. The research suggests that genetic differences at the humanin site are associated with measurably better or worse health outcomes. One gene raising risk. Another potentially canceling it out. That doesn't mean we should all start taking humanin by any means. Just that it's an interesting area that requires more research in humans. It's a reminder that the story your genetics are telling may be more complicated — and more hopeful — than a single risk factor can capture. Tune into the full conversation, out now on all major streaming platforms.
