@wessie7582: ✨ The ingredient your skin is naturally familiar with… Why squalane is different from many other facial oils. 🧬 Here’s the biology: 💧 YOUR SKIN ALREADY MAKES A RELATED LIPID Human sebum naturally contains squalene, an important component of the skin’s surface lipids. Squalane is the hydrogenated, more stable form of squalene. That hydrogenation is important because it makes squalane much more resistant to oxidation. 🧬 WHY THAT MATTERS Squalane has a structure that is highly compatible with the skin’s natural lipid environment. It isn’t identical to your sebum, but it’s a lipid your skin is very well equipped to tolerate. That’s one reason squalane is known for being: ✨ Lightweight ✨ Emollient ✨ Highly stable ✨ Generally very well tolerated ✨ Helpful for reducing moisture loss And unlike some plant oils, squalane is not particularly prone to oxidation. 🌿 WHAT ABOUT OTHER FACIAL OILS? Coconut oil, rosehip oil, argan oil and other botanical oils can absolutely have benefits. But they’re chemically different from the lipids naturally produced by your skin. Squalane is unique because it’s closely related to a lipid your skin naturally produces. 💧 WHAT DOES SQUALANE ACTUALLY DO? It helps soften the skin and support the skin barrier by reducing transepidermal water loss. Think of it as a lightweight lipid layer that helps keep moisture in. And because it’s so stable and generally well tolerated, it’s a great option for dry, sensitive or barrier-compromised skin. ✨ AND THEN THERE’S AGING Sebum production generally declines with age. And during perimenopause, hormonal changes can contribute to changes in oil production, dryness and barrier function. This is where squalane can be especially helpful. You’re not “replacing your sebum.” You’re supplementing the skin’s surface with a highly compatible, stable lipid. 🤍 And that’s what makes squalane one of my favorite facial oils for dry or changing skin. #squalane #perimenopauseskincare #skincareover40 #skinbarrier #skincaretips
