@interstellarspac: 🚀 Voyager 1: Humanity’s Farthest Explorer Voyager 1, launched by NASA in 1977, is the most distant human-made object ever sent into space. It crossed into interstellar space in August 2012 and continues to transmit scientific data from beyond the Sun’s heliosphere. Today, Voyager 1 is more than 15 billion miles (about 24–25 billion km) from Earth. Because of that enormous distance, a radio signal takes roughly 23 hours to travel one way between Earth and the spacecraft. NASA reported in 2026 that the probe is operating with increasingly limited power as its plutonium-based radioisotope generators gradually lose output. And the technology is remarkably old: Voyager carries only about 68 KB of computer memory by NASA's calculation and an eight-track digital tape recorder for storing some data. NASA describes the Voyagers as technological time capsules from the 1970s, yet they remain the only spacecraft to have directly explored interstellar space. One correction to the infographic: the “69 KB” figure is commonly rounded; NASA's current FAQ calculates the total computer memory at about 68 KB. Also, the claim that it is operating specifically on “1977 FORTRAN code” is too simplistic and isn't supported by the NASA sources above.
