A promising young footballer, he signed with Glasgow Rangers as a teenager before a knee injury ended that career and sent him into hotel management and then professional kitchens. He trained under exacting mentors including Marco Pierre White, Albert Roux, Joël Robuchon and Guy Savoy, becoming head chef at London’s Aubergine in 1993 and earning the restaurant two Michelin stars. In 1998 he opened his flagship, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in Chelsea; by 2001 it had three Michelin stars, a distinction it has held for a quarter-century, making Ramsay one of the most decorated British chefs of his generation. Beyond the fine-dining kitchen he built a global restaurant group that by 2026 numbered around 100 venues, from Las Vegas and Dubai to London’s 22 Bishopsgate, while remaining best known to millions as the fierce, profane host of Hell’s Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmares and MasterChef. Married to Tana Ramsay since 1996, he is the father of six children and an Officer of the Order of the British Empire.
