I said something to my dad that made him uncomfortable. I was ten and I asked my dad, when will I learn about money? He thought for a moment and said, schools don’t teach you the subject money. I was confused, so I asked, then how do I get rich? He replied, stay in school, get good grades, get your PhD. Then I said something that made him uncomfortable. Dad… you have a PhD, and we’re poor. Instead of getting angry with me, he did something that split my life in two directions. He sent me to my best friend’s father, a man who dropped out of school at 13, a man who owned businesses instead of resumes, a man who didn’t teach with lectures. He made me work for free. At first I thought he was cheap, later I realized he was teaching me the most valuable lesson of my life. School taught how to be an employee, he taught me how to think like an owner. He taught me not to seek security but how to build freedom. He taught me not to earn a paycheck but the difference between an asset and a liability. See, rich parents want their children to be smart about money, that’s why rich kids learn how businesses work, how assets produce income, how debt can be used wisely, and how taxes really work. Overall you guys should know, the tragedy isn’t poverty, the tragedy is never being taught how money actually works. That’s the difference between my two dads. Same country, same opportunities, same economy… but different education. So understand this, academic education and financial education are not the same thing. #robertkiyosaki #richdadpoordad
