The first we came to Japan was in 2018 when my daughter was 2 1/2 and my son wasn’t even born yet. We’ve been 3 times since then, including this time and THIS time is for 3 months. How to prepare yourself before you come: 1️⃣ Not to scare you off but most people don’t speak English. Every restaurant we’ve eaten in has pictures on the menu and so you translate what looks good with Google Translate and then just point at it and tell them how many. Or you order from a tablet. Some have an English option and some don’t. At some places, you order from a vending machine when you first arrive. They’re usually not in English but they also usually have pictures so again, Google Translate. It’s not as hard or annoying as it sounds. 2️⃣ Public trash cans aren’t a thing AND it’s the cleanest place you’ll ever go. People in Japan don’t walk around and eat and drink. They sit down where they buy food, and return the trash to the establishment. Many times back to a person or a return area. No trash can. If you carry a day bag or tote, bring a plastic bag for any trash you end up with. 3️⃣ a Kombini is a convenient store and it's not gross like you're thinking. You might already know this, but 7/11 is famous in Japan and people shop there for real food. It's a thing and you are missing out if you don't hit this up. It’s part of the experience, just like riding the trains. I am 100% writing a full article on everything that makes Japan awesome and why it's a favorite place to visit. I'm not telling you to visit shrines or observation decks - Chat will tell you that, and should ABSOLTELY DO THAT. But I did that the first couple times I came. I'm telling you the little things you should know so you're not freaked out and feel like you can totally do this. Because you can. Japan is awesome and you don’t want to miss it just because you’r nervous about it or bc it’s outside your comfort zone. I’m an American mom of 2 and we left the country on a one-way ticket. It’s not our first time but it might be our last. ➡️ click the link in bio to subscribe to my Substack see where we are!
