Is this different from what you imagined? Large aboveground vertical storage tanks are not always built upward from the bottom course. In some projects, the upper shell courses and roof are first assembled close to ground level. After each stage is completed, the assembled portion of the tank is lifted, allowing the next shell course to be installed underneath. This is the classic tank jacking method, also commonly known as the reverse erection method. That’s why you can see the crane lifting shell plates and positioning them beneath the raised tank for fit-up and subsequent welding. This method allows much of the shell assembly, welding, and inspection work to be carried out close to ground level, reducing work at height while improving construction efficiency. This erection method is very common in many small and medium-sized vertical storage tank projects. Depending on the design and site conditions, it may be used for fixed roof diesel storage tanks, internal floating roof gasoline tanks, chemical storage tanks, fire water tanks, dome roof tanks, self-supported roof tanks, cone roof tanks, API 650 tanks, aboveground storage tanks, field-welded tanks, desalination water storage tanks, industrial water storage tanks, and some large silo projects. As a storage tank manufacturer and tank engineering contractor, I believe mature tank construction is not simply about building faster. It is about moving complex work at height to a safer and more controllable working level whenever practical, improving efficiency while maintaining quality and safety.
