A VOLUNTARY COLD CASE CONFESSION? Nearly 39 years after Melissa Ellison was killed inside her Jacksonville, Florida home, deputies say the man responsible walked into a bank to settle his affairs, then called police and asked to confess. Ellison, 20, was found dead in her bed from blunt force trauma on Dec. 28, 1987, after her roommates discovered her 13-month-old child crying alone on a couch. The case remained unsolved for decades. According to the arrest report, 70-year-old Gary Edward Glowacz contacted authorities just last week, on July 8, and said he wanted to “set things straight.” Detectives say Glowacz admitted breaking into Ellison’s home while looking for money to buy drugs and striking her with a log. After hitting Ellison, Glowacz allegedly told detectives he carried her child from the bedroom to the living room, placed the toddler on the couch and surrounded the child with pillows before returning to search for money. Police said he accurately described the home, the crime scene and details that had never been publicly released. Glowacz reportedly told detectives he realized he was responsible after reading an online article about the cold case in March. At the time of the killing, police say Glowacz lived about half a mile from Ellison’s home. Court records show his criminal history includes several past burglaries. Glowacz is charged with second-degree murder with a weapon and burglary with assault or battery. He is being held without bond. Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters said the arrest cannot undo the loss suffered by Ellison’s family, but he hopes it brings them another step toward healing. #TrueCrime #ColdCase #Jacksonville
