'I need a rest, sorry' But it’s not what you think. Detective Sergeant Dan Thrale had just completed his eleventh marathon of the year, and wasn’t even working, when he came across a shoplifter while browsing for a sandwich. But when duty calls, duty calls. When officers arrived at the scene, Mr Thrale, who hadn't even started his shift yet, was keen to hand over, admitting he needed to take a break, having just tackled the thief to the ground. Essex Police say the detective endured "a 12-minute tussle with the prolific shoplifter" in Southend in December 2025, before officers arrived to make the arrest. Newly released video shows the moment Mr Thrale wrestled the shoplifter to the ground, after spotting him filling a bag with goods and carrying boxes of beer towards the exit. Mr Thrale said: "I'm no stranger to endurance challenges, but I was absolutely shattered by the end of it and so relieved to see the unit arrive." The shoplifter was later charged with theft from a shop and obstructing a constable, admitted the offences, and has since been sentenced. Mr Thrale went on to complete his goal of running a dozen marathons across 2025 to raise money for the Stroke Association - in honour of his father, who suffered a stroke in 2022.
