T9-1 :
Mitosis and meiosis are two important processes that happen in cells. Both processes involve cell division, which means one cell divides to produce new cells. However, they have different purposes and produce different types of cells. Mitosis is mainly used for growth, repair, and replacing old or damaged cells, while meiosis is used to produce reproductive cells.
Mitosis is a type of cell division that produces two new cells from one original cell. The two new cells are called daughter cells. They are genetically identical to the original cell and usually have the same number of chromosomes. This allows an organism to grow and replace cells that have been damaged or have died.
Before mitosis begins, the cell copies its DNA. DNA contains the instructions that control the activities of the cell. The copied chromosomes then become organized so that they can be divided equally. This preparation is important because each daughter cell needs a complete set of genetic information.
Mitosis happens through several stages: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. During prophase, chromosomes become visible and the nucleus begins to break down. During metaphase, chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell. During anaphase, the copies of the chromosomes separate and move to opposite sides. During telophase, two new nuclei form, and the cell eventually divides into two cells.
Meiosis is different from mitosis because it produces reproductive cells, also called gametes. In humans, these include sperm cells and egg cells. Meiosis produces four daughter cells, and each one has half the number of chromosomes of the original cell. This is important because when an egg and sperm join during fertilization, the normal number of chromosomes is restored.
Meiosis occurs in two main divisions called meiosis I and meiosis II. The DNA is copied before meiosis begins, but the cell divides twice. During meiosis I, pairs of chromosomes separate. During meiosis II, the chromosome copies separate. At the end of the process, four genetically different cells are produced.
