@dwnews: The Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine 2026 has gone jointly to US scientist Karl Deisseroth as well as Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel from Germany for their "discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics." The announcement was made at the Nobel Assembly in Stockholm on Monday, October 5. It has previously been awarded 116 times to 232 laureates between 1901 and 2025. Last year's prize was awarded jointly to Mary Brunkow and Fred Ramsdell of the United States and Shimun Sakaguchi of Japan for "for their discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance." The award for medicine is the first Nobel prize to be announced this week, with laureates set to be named in physics, chemistry, literature and peace in the days up to Friday. #dwnews
