Smartphone apps and QR codes replace traditional ATM cards in new banking initiative. JAPAN'S BANKING REVOLUTION No ATM cards. Smartphone-only access. A new approach to banking security. 🇯🇵 JAPAN’S BIGGEST BANKING GROUP IS GOING CARDLESS! A major development in the future of banking. Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), one of Japan’s largest financial institutions, is preparing to launch a digital-only bank that will not issue traditional ATM cards. Instead, customers will need a smartphone application to access their accounts and withdraw cash using QR codes at supported ATMs. The new service, expected to launch by March 2027, will also operate without conventional computer or desktop banking access. Why the change? Cybersecurity. Japanese banks are facing growing threats from phishing, account theft and increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks, including those assisted by artificial intelligence. The new system is intended to introduce additional layers of authentication and reduce reliance on traditional ATM cards. But the move raises important questions. What happens if your phone is lost, stolen or runs out of battery? And what about customers who don’t use smartphones? Is this the future of safer banking, or are we becoming too dependent on technology? What do you think? Photo: Akonnchiroll, MUFG Bank HQ (2023), via Wikimedia Commons.
