@achefstour: Ayutthaya street food guides perform Ploi Pla
Floodwater has been spreading through Ayutthaya since the Chao Phraya overflowed its banks in late September, reaching homes along the river. Heavy rain warnings on 5 October covered 51 provinces and Bangkok, and runoff from the north is still pushing the river higher below the Chao Phraya dam. Communities across central Thailand are dealing with rising water. In the middle of it, two of our A Chef's Tour street food guides visited a morning wet market in Ayutthaya to pick lucky fish, not for dinner, but to return to the river. In Thai, ploi pla simply means releasing fish. As a Buddhist practice, it is a way of giving abhaya-dāna, the gift of freedom from harm, and the chance to keep living and it is a Thai Buddhist practice. Our guides told us it is about practising compassion and not harming, and valuing every living being: you save a life without expecting anything in return. Wet markets like this are where Ayutthaya street food begins, and they are also where traditions like this one still happen every day. Our love goes out to everyone affected by the floods, and our thanks to our guides for inviting us along. We have 2 tours in Ayutthaya and even during the rainy season they are going strong, link to our website can be found on our website
