The code you have commented is for catalytic inefficiency. This just means that the catalyst isn’t working as well as the car wants it to. If the catalyst was actually blocked you would have no power and likely be in limp mode so I would suggest it may just be dirty. Your best course of action would be to get hold of a bottle of cataclean about £17 on Amazon. Put this in with some premium fuel and go for a dual carriageway run at 70 in 4th for 20minutes or so to get the exhaust hot and allow the cleaner to work. You may well find this clears it out enough to meet the efficiency requirements and put the light out. If you don’t have any luck then a cheap code reader may be worth getting so you can check the codes yourself, if the only code you have is for the catalyst then keep driving it. Topdon do a basic handheld one for £20 which would do the trick. Given that the MOT is still in date and you say the car is behaving normally driving it with that code is unlikely to do any harm which would give you time to save for a replacement if needed but I would recommend finding a good local independent to diagnose the issue first.

Not being funny, but is it a diesel car that you’re driving? And doing small journeys in it

you don't say what vehicle, it's usually that it's insufficient so if it was blocked it wouldn't run , have only ever come across one , and the previous guy in a big dealership had changed the engine ,

I’m assuming it’s a petrol car and if it’s passed its emissions on the mot then there’s a good chance the cats ok. If it’s blocked the car would struggle to drive properly. My guess is an oxygen sensor which you can check using live data.

If no symptoms and the car runs fine. Maybe try a fuel cleaner and give it a good run and I’m talking motorway level’s good speed get the cat hot. I’d never trust Halfords to do a repair. Have they tried clearing the code? could have been a dirty sensor that’s flagged up a code. Had it happen before cleared it and it never came back

what car is it? and how old? cats dont block unless its a diesel then its the dpf that blocks and the sesor there getting a reading for its the PM sensor ... which doesnt mean it blocked it telling the car that to much particals are getting past the dpf and also in your diagnosis from halford did they give you the mbar presure reading from the pressure sensor if its a diesel what are the reading? prob easier to post the print out of the diagnosis for everyone to read 👌

I’m a mechanic myself. Did you manage to get any paper work from them indicating the fault code etc. could be number of things. Normally if a cat is weak or poor performance you’ll get a eggy smell from the rear

there is no way a code made them think the cat is blocked. cats dont just block. if it was blocked for whatever reason, it would be blowing gasket seals and youd have really shit performance. I need to know what the codes were, to be able to offer any assistance. the MOT is irrelevant, it only matters what condition the car was in at that time. additionally, you have an emissions test within the mot if there was an issue would have been detected. honestly, go somewhere else. dont trust halfords. if youre in kent I can assist.
