When the ventricles contract, that pattern reverses. The familiar “lub-dub” is created by valve closure. S1 (“lub”) occurs when the mitral and tricuspid valves close at the beginning of ventricular systole, while S2 (“dub”) occurs when the aortic and pulmonary valves close as systole ends and diastole begins. These valves do not actively pull themselves open or shut. Their movement is driven mainly by pressure differences between the chambers and major vessels, creating one-way blood flow through the heart. The chordae tendineae and papillary muscles help stabilize the atrioventricular valves during contraction and prevent them from prolapsing backward. Another remarkable detail: the heart muscle itself receives much of its coronary blood supply during diastole, when the ventricles relax. In every single beat, electrical activation, pressure changes, valve motion, muscle contraction, and coronary perfusion are synchronized within fractions of a second.
