Because we live in a male-dominated FREAK-SHOW society where when a woman says something happened to her, she’s told: “Where’s the video?” “Where’s the proof?” “Where’s the evidence?” “She asked for it.” “He couldn’t control himself.” So let me understand the double standard. When a woman says, “A man hurt me,” they demand visual proof of the incident. But when a woman is accused of hurting someone, of unaliving someone, his word and the absence of video doesn’t stop people from believing him and deciding she’s guilty. That’s why we’re angry. We have spent our entire lives being told “Your word isn’t enough. We don’t believe you.” And then we watch a woman’s life get torn to shreds while people confidently decide what happened without ever seeing the crime happen. That’s a big fucking problem. Men are so triggered in these comments. Let’s look at some real numbers. Women and men both experience violence, but pretending they experience the same kinds of violence at the same rates ignores reality. Women are far more likely to experience rape, sexual violence, stalking, and serious violence from an intimate partner. Recent CDC estimates show about 6.7 million women compared with 2.8 million men experienced sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in a single year. Women experience severe intimate-partner violence at roughly twice the lifetime rate of men. Men are absolutely victims of violence too—and men make up a large share of assault, robbery, and homicide victims. But when we’re talking about the threat of sexual violence and violence from a partner, women carry a dramatically heavier burden. Acknowledging that isn’t dismissing male victims. It’s acknowledging what the data actually show women are living with.
