This seems so straightforward until you realize that excess electricity is going to have to go somewhere

someone has no idea how voltage regulation works on the grid. The problem is too much electricity is charged back to the grid on sunny hours. This causes the voltage to spike. Voltage regulation requires that the amount of electricity pumped in to the grid is almost equal with the electricity used up on the other side. If there is not enought users, the voltage will spike. This is the main problem with solar, as you cant regulate it nearly as much as any kind of powerplant

All of yall are saying nuclear is better acting like both aren’t 100 times better for the environment than oil/gas. My house runs on solar panels and it pays for 100% of the power in the house.

the funniest thing is that solar isn’t even one of the highest net-producers of energy per investment..

yeah and then you would get paid to use electricity or have to pay to put electricity into the grid

On the contrary, solar panels are a very inefficient source of energy, requiring far more space than a power plant. For a domestic environment? The roof is more than enough, but to power a city? It's extremely impractical.

i don't think yall understand. this problem is not simply "ohh a big bad evil company" type of thing,it complex. why does energy source need to be profitable or atleast break event? because if not then itll lose money and no fund can keep the energy source running. remember that energy sources are not free. are worker you have to pay, materials, maintenance etc etc

This simply means that solar produces more than is being consumed at these hours, meaning that surplus energy must be wasted or you pay someone to consume it (usually industries that have the flexibility in their production) aka negative prices. So the problem is that we are not able to produce that type of variable renewable energy when we need it. Has nothing to do with monopolising energy
