@todayshow: Leigh Bardugo calls her hit debut young adult novel "Shadow and Bone" a "lifeline" that helped her out of a decade-long depression. Bardugo told Jenna Bush Hager on the Open Book with Jenna podcast that she "was very lost at the time. I was in a very scary relationship. I had really isolated myself, just out of deep shame, from my friends, from my family." She also says there were parallels between her real life and the hit novel. "Writing 'Shadow and Bone,” which is ironically, about a girl finding her way through the physical and literal darkness, became this lifeline, not just because financially, it allowed me to get out. But also because it reminded me I was good at something." Stream the Open Book with Jenna podcast featuring author Leigh Bardugo wherever you get your podcasts.
