@online_safe2022backup: ROMANCE ABUSE AWARENESS WEEK UK ❤️ I’m proud to support Romance Abuse Awareness Week UK, an important awareness campaign led by the fantastic Anna Rowe of Catch The Catfish and LoveSaid. At the heart of this campaign is something incredibly important: giving victims a voice. Romance fraud is not simply about money being stolen. The consequences can be devastating and long-lasting. Victims can lose their sense of trust, confidence, financial security and, in some cases, their entire understanding of what was real within a relationship. Behind every statistic is a person who believed they were building a genuine emotional connection with someone. The relationship may have been fabricated by the offender, but the victim’s feelings, experiences and subsequent trauma were very real. That is why survivor voices matter. When people who have experienced romance fraud feel able to tell their stories, they help others recognise the manipulation, grooming, love bombing, coercion and emotional dependency that can occur long before money is ever requested. Their voices can challenge the stigma that still surrounds romance fraud. They can help another victim realise, “This is happening to me.” They can help families understand why simply telling someone to “stop talking to them” is rarely enough. And importantly, they remind victims that becoming a victim of sophisticated emotional manipulation is nothing to be ashamed of. Romance Abuse Awareness Week creates an opportunity to listen to those voices, learn from lived experience and turn some of the most devastating experiences into education that may protect someone else. OnlineSafe is proud to stand alongside Anna, Catch The Catfish, LoveSaid, fellow advocates and, most importantly, every victim and survivor who chooses to use their voice to create change.
