Keep a small journal in your purse and stop what you’re doing and write it down when she says it in front of her. Tell her you’re writing a book about her and what to get the quotes right. She won’t like the idea of memorializing what she says because she knows it’s wrong.

with my MIL I started saying "what an odd thing to say out loud" or I'd adopt a really patronizing tone and say "Ope, that's an inside thought. we don't comment on people's bodies." it was very effective

The reason why this continues is because no one is honest with her back. You should apply the same principles back to her and tell her that you’re just being honest, and you know that she appreciates honesty.

i started telling my mother "yes you are JUST being honest. not kind, no compassionate, not considerate, not loving. not anything a mother should be. JUST honest" that gave her something to think about. I also told her that I think that people who are "brutally honest" usually value brutality a lot more than honesty. and I told her, instead of asking herself "is saying this honest?" she should also ask herself "is it helpful? is it kind? is it necessary?" honestly is nothing without those considerations. saying their honest thought is what toddlers and drunk people do. adults with self regulation skills should really consider before speaking.
