@scott.austin.martin: Your trigger may not be proof that something is wrong with you. It may be a protective response that developed when your nervous system was trying to survive something it could not fully make sense of. Maybe that was rejection. Betrayal. Abandonment. Not feeling chosen. Not feeling safe. The event may be over. You may no longer be the child who first learned that response. And still, your body can react as if the old danger is happening right now. That is why insight is not always enough. You can understand the story perfectly and still feel your chest tighten, your stomach drop, your jaw clench, or the urge to defend, control, flee, shut down, or disappear. Coping and processing are not the same thing. Coping can help you get through a hard moment. It can manage discomfort, create distance from it, or make it more tolerable. Sometimes that is exactly what you need. Processing has a different aim. With enough safety, capacity, and qualified support, somatic approaches may help you work with the nervous system response that keeps treating an old wound like a current emergency. The past does not disappear. The facts do not change. But the story may not have to define you with the same intensity. Link in bio for SOMA.
