@rachelmulherin: Looking for any interfaith resources for raising kids in a Muslim Christian household. We aren’t super religious but plan to expose her to both, celebrate holidays etc and would love to see what other people are doing. #muslim #christian #interfaith #firsttimemom

If your husband is Muslim then the child is to be raised Muslim. That’s the deal. I would send your child to the masjid and sign them up for Sunday school. That’s what my Christian mother and Pakistani father did and it was the best decision.

In Islam, it’s a Muslim parent’s duty to teach them Islam accurately but it’s up to them to choose the religion or not later on in life with their heart. Islam also encourages us to learn all religions by reading their holy books which I did and I ended up choosing Islam. Teach them all the Abrahamic religions and tell them to read each holy book themselves. They’ll be able to choose later on in life what they’d want to practice by heart.

My husband is Muslim. I was raised Catholic but I’m nonpracticing. My husband and I are very liberal so we follow the tenants of Islam and fast during Ramadan and mourn during Muharram (Shia) but we also do (commercial) Christmas and they do Easter with my parents. Our kids identify as Muslim but they pray surahs and the Lord’s Prayer. And we respect every religion (or lack there of) and celebrate our friends and families holidays with them.

My mom is Muslim and my dad is Catholic and they raised me and my brother without a religion. Culture and traditions — yes, religion — no. Both my brother and I are so thankful for this.

im Catholic and husband Muslim.. we're also not super religious.. BUT my children are being raised with some Islamic practices .. not eating pork, drinking alcohol, etc. Plus more ive learned about Islam (my own will) more sense it makes to me than what I was raised on.

As someone who was raised in a Pakistani and white household, not having one set religion made it very confusing and I am still trying to find my way with religion. I think it’s important to realize that it’s confusing being raised with two religions especially when your child will be growing up with other people who are not being raised that way. It’s very isolating and makes it hard to find where you belong

I was raised evangelical Christian but I’m Lebanese American so there was also culturally a lot of similarities to Islam. And my partner is Muslim. We would raise kids in Islam. One thing I found to be so far a really stark difference is Islam teaches to respect other religions and it’s not focused on converting people etc and in MY experience, evangelical Christianity is strongly focused around converting people to Christianity and it’s the only correct religion. So for me that was such a big and important shift! (And aligns with my belief and experience in life)

I was raised in a Christian / Islamic household. I really liked having exposure to both and I loved being able to decide my own path

I’m Muslim and my husband is Jewish and we’re focused on the fundamentals of each which are the same, kindness, compassion & empathy! We celebrate the holidays and value the cultures (Ramadan, Hanukah etc.) and we find it works really well for us. Neither of us are super religious but we value our communities!

The man is the head of household therefore if the father wants to teach them Islam then that’s what the children should be learning in my opinion. That’s why Muslim men can marry outside the religion

I grew up in an interfaith household and I don’t recommend. I was raised Christian mostly but I ended up Muslim as an adult. I heard this is very common in many west African countries

My sister is a Hindu/muslim household & kids are being raised in both. They’re both culturally religious than anything else so it’s no biggies. My parents(who’re Muslim) have episodic tantrums but we try to tell them that religion is a path, not singular. It’s your chosen language to communicate to god in, not the only language.

as someone that was raised Muslim in a household where my dad was Muslim and my mom was Catholic, I would just say please don't, even inadvertently shit on the other person's religion. My dad had such disdain for anything Christian, even silly stuff like Christmas decorations. also be very cognizant of the people you expose them to within those religious communities - there can be a lot of judgment from the outside towards mixed faith families. you want them to be confident in who they are and present it as a strength and a positive.

My dad was Muslim (Pakistani), mom Christian. Neither were religious, but suddenly when I was 13-14, my dad found Islam again and got super religious out of nowhere. He demanded we study Islam and my mom allowed it because she wasn’t religious herself. Our whole life changed seemingly overnight and I resented him for it. I now follow no religion.

Interfaith households (specifically Muslim dad Christian mom) are very common in West Africa. Not sure what background your husband is but those communities may have experiences or resources you could find on TikTok that are helpful!

I was raised interfaith and am so thankful for it. My parents weren’t overly religious so I feel like I got to experience both without being forced to do anything. It helped shape me and instill a value of acceptance of other cultures / religions. I hope I get to instill that value in my children one day. ♥️

I was raised catholic but my mom put me in different religious church camps and took me to different churches and bought me different bibles. I also watched alot of religious documentaries and had so many books and encyclopedias. Im very grateful for my experiences.

Hello! I was born and raised pakistani muslim. My husband was Catholic but hes more so agnostic at this point in our lives. We both agreed on raising our son without either religion, sort of like the Japanese do. We will definitely be teaching him our cultures as we view culture independent of religion. As our son gets older and expresses an interest in either faith he is, we will honor that and teach him or learn a whole other one for him if thats what he wants.

Islam is pluralistic and universalist, and not about a particular label, if you read the Quran— that’s why marriages to other scriptured people or “people of the book” are explicitly allowed. I’m Muslim and my husband is Catholic. Neither one of us had the expectation for the other to convert; in fact, we grow closer to culture, God and spirituality through our individual and each other’s paths. And the more we dive into the actual texts, the more the original messages are identical, just through different cultural lenses.
