@molly.on.nights: Nurses, do you get paid for being at work early to do handover? Is it fair to be asked to come to work early even if you don’t get paid??? #nurse #nursetok #nurselife #nhs
Nah, I don't work for free and neither should anyone doing handovers

I'd expect to be either paid for the 15 minutes or let away 15 minutes early. if it's a regular occurrence those 15 minutes add up.

Am I the only one who thinks this is normal for work? I have always gone in early to start work and have always taught my kids to do the same. Maybe I am just strange

When I worked in care the night staff worked from 2000 to 0800 and day staff from 0730 to 2030. Hand over was 0730-0800 and 2000-2030, so everyone was there but nobody did extra unpaid.

Not matter if that’s night shift or day shift if they want you to come to work early then they should paid for it

as a night shift worker, I only ask that my colleagues are there ready for handover at 7am, not going to get a cuppa first, not chatting about whatever. as more often than not the day team are in there 10 mins plus early at the end of there shift wanting to handover to get home. so same applies really

Agree. Want me there early. Pay me! Equally you want me to work late or in my own time. Pay me!

Can’t speak for all Trusts, but where I work the night staff finish at 7:30am and the day staff start at 7am. The same applies in the transition from the day team to the night team. That half hour overlap in each shift is the handover time. An employer can only direct staff when they’re on the clock. If they need people in at 6:45, they must be paid from 6:45.

We have a 30 minute handover time rota’d on. One shift starts at 07:45/19:45 and the other shift finishes at 08:15/20:15. It’s completely insane to expect you to work handover time for free

Former NHS call handler here. Even if I worked 4 extra minutes, it went on my timesheet and they paid. Would they let you add ten minutes to your break and pay you?
