A LOT happens during the birth process, including your baby’s first hour of life. Many ask how and when to start breastfeeding their newborn - and in an *ideal* breastfeeding world, it goes like this ⬇️ 1️⃣ baby is born crying 2️⃣ they’re placed skin-to-skin with mom on her belly to relax 3️⃣ baby alerts, starts to wiggle 4️⃣ more activity happens including rooting or mouthing 5️⃣ baby crawls toward breast using a stepping reflex 6️⃣ baby rests a little more 7️⃣ baby gets to know mom/breasts with sucking/licking (this phase can last awhile) 8️⃣ baby self-attaches and suckles using more reflexes (typically happens within first hour) 9️⃣ baby takes a well deserved nap (1.5-2 hrs after birth) If this was not your experience, you’re not alone (🙋🏼‍♀️). Best practice is to maximize skin to skin and minimize mom/baby separation, but sometimes this can’t be done for a number of reasons. If you missed out on witnessing the “breast crawl” or that first feeding, your breastfeeding journey is not ruined. LOTS of skin to skin, on demand feeding (when able), and adequate stimulation of breasts when you’re separated can support your breastfeeding goals tremendously ❤️ Disclaimer: this video is for educational purposes only and is a supplement to my video on laidback breastfeeding to help parents understand what makes that possible in the first hour of baby’s life ☺️ #breastcrawl #skintoskin #breastfeeding #birthstory
