Kepler-62e is a "super-Earth" exoplanet discovered in 2013 by NASA's Kepler space telescope. Located about 1,200 light-years away in the constellation Lyra, it is one of the most intriguing worlds found so far. Its defining feature is that it orbits within the habitable zone of its star, where conditions could theoretically allow liquid water to exist on its surface. The planet orbits an orange dwarf star named Kepler-62, which is older and cooler than our Sun. A single year on Kepler-62e lasts 122.4 Earth days, and the planet is roughly 1.6 times the size of Earth. Despite orbiting closer to its star than Earth does to the Sun, the cooler temperature of its host star means Kepler-62e receives only about 20% more stellar energy than Earth, creating the potential for a moderate climate. Scientists hypothesize that Kepler-62e could be a water world, completely covered by a global ocean with no solid land. However, another possibility exists: a thick, dense atmosphere could create a runaway greenhouse effect, turning the planet into a scorching, Venus-like desert. Determining the exact composition of its atmosphere and surface remains a major goal for future space telescopes. #sciencetok #astrophysics #scary #earth
