Context .ᐟ Disclaimer: I am agnostic. I approach religion philosophically, appreciating the truths, questions and symbolism that can exist within it without ever claiming any one interpretation as absolute. I believe ideas this meaningful are worth exploring and sharing, regardless of what you or I personally believe. Fruit for thought. This series is not claiming that Genesis literally describes human reproduction. It explores an allegorical reading of Eden by placing details from the biblical story beside the biological and philosophical experience of becoming human. My starting point was the idea of Eden as a state of wholeness: Adam and Eve exist within a garden where they are provided for, naked without shame and living before the rupture that defines the rest of the story. I began comparing that state to the womb: an enclosed environment in which life is sustained before entering a world it has never experienced. From there, I began reading Adam and Eve symbolically. Genesis forms Adam from the ground, and after the Fall tells him that he will return to it: “dust you are and to dust you will return.” His name is also linguistically connected to the Hebrew word for ground, adamah. In my interpretation, Adam can therefore represent embodied, mortal humanity. Eve is named because she would become “the mother of all living.” In this reading, I use her as a symbol of life itself. I then interpret the serpent as an outside force entering this state of wholeness. One possible layer is lust or reproduction. Within the womb analogy, its form and its approach to Eve allow it to represent sperm approaching the egg. The fruit is then read not as literal fertilization, but as the moment the previously undisturbed state changes. There is an interesting biological parallel here. When a human egg is activated, researchers have observed a rapid release of zinc sometimes described as a “zinc spark.”. I find the resemblance interesting within the allegory: Eve, whom I am using to represent life, receives the fruit first; Adam, representing mortal humanity, follows. Life begins, and mortality becomes inseparable from it. Genesis then describes their eyes being opened, their awareness of nakedness, their expulsion from Eden and Adam’s eventual return to dust. In Part I, I explored whether leaving the garden could therefore be read symbolically as birth: leaving a protected state of unity and entering conscious and mortal human existence.
