Margaret Hamilton, the pioneering computer scientist whose software helped NASA land humans on the Moon, has died at the age of 90. She passed away on September 30, 2026, according to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Hamilton led a team of approximately 100 engineers at MIT’s Instrumentation Laboratory responsible for developing the onboard flight software used during NASA’s Apollo missions. Her work became especially important on July 20, 1969, when Apollo 11’s lunar module was descending toward the Moon. Just minutes before landing, the spacecraft’s computer began displaying multiple overload alarms. The software developed by Hamilton’s team was designed to recognize problems, recover from errors and prioritize essential tasks. Instead of allowing the overload to interrupt the landing, the computer continued performing the calculations needed to guide Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin safely to the lunar surface. At the time, the Apollo Guidance Computer had only about 72 kilobytes of memory, far less than even the simplest modern electronic devices. Hamilton also helped establish software engineering as a recognized professional discipline. During an era when computer programming was often treated as secondary to hardware development, she argued that software required the same engineering standards and rigorous testing. In 2016, President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, recognizing her contributions to space exploration and modern computing. One of her most famous photographs shows her standing beside a towering stack of printed Apollo software listings developed by her team. That software helped accomplish one of humanity’s greatest technological achievements. Her work continues to influence how engineers design reliable software for spacecraft and other safety-critical systems. Source: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), October 7, 2026.
