Moriarty's Gem Art :
This fluorite came from the famous Rogerley Mine in the UK, known for its rich green crystals and incredible blue daylight fluorescence. The nearby Diana Maria Mine in Weardale continues to produce some beautiful fluorescent fluorite today.
What made this crystal special was its deep green color, clarity, and strong blue fluorescence. Fluorite is soft and easily damaged, so it’s really a collector’s gemstone rather than something I’d recommend for jewelry.
The biggest challenge was preserving the fluorescence while cutting it. In this crystal, the strongest blue response was concentrated in a thin layer near the natural crystal surfaces. If I cut too much away, I could end up with a beautiful green gem but lose the blue fluorescence that made it so unique.
Because of that, I followed the natural faces and removed as little material as possible from the pavilion. That’s why the underside has an unusual, simple design with just the main facets and a culet facet, paired with a step-cut crown.
The result exceeded my expectations. It has surprisingly beautiful brilliance, and most importantly, I preserved that incredible green-to-blue daylight fluorescence.
For the best effect, view it in diffused daylight rather than direct sunlight. The UV in daylight brings out the blue, and under longwave UV it fluoresces intensely too.
