@annie.wagstaff: I don’t have this often but it’s such a disturbing feeling. Apparently some people have it every night?!

I thought it was an electrical discharge of excess activity from the brain.

Sounds similar to the Moro Reflex - when babies flail their arms and legs for a moment - the sense of falling triggers it.

I heard it’s because the brain thinks the heart stopping so it sends a jolt of electricity to kick start your heart!

It happens when your brain recalls when you looked at your electric bill, 😁

I know that thing. It doesn't happen when you're about to sleep. It happens randomly even when standing, especially in the washroom. Anyway, I like your hair.

it happens because the body has relaxed quicker than the brain would normally interpret, it thinks breathing is about to stop, the jerk is the involuntary reaction to wake you and reset. also known as the death rattle.

My poor little dog stopped sleeping next to me because of this. She thought I was pushing her away and I couldn’t explain to he that it was involuntary. The cats sleep through it though. Q

Is that when we are sleeping and dreaming of falling, and then we wake up?

the truth behind this is your mind closes down to quickly before your muscles relax, similar to death, therefore the body has a defence mechanism to whereby it tries to jump start the body, also known as the falling effect,
