@thecrimedesk: An Arizona man who hunted down a female hiker and brutally stabbed her to death has taken a plea deal to avoid the death penalty. Zion Teasley, 25, pleaded guilty to the 2023 murder of Lauren Heike, 29, who was fatally stabbed 15 times on a hiking trail in Phoenix. Prosecutors said Teasley ambushed Heike and chased her along the trail, and several of her belongings were found strewn on a barbed wire fence she had run through nearby to where her body was found. Heike did not know her killer. She suffered a number of fatal wounds to her upper body during the frenzied attack, police said, before her body was left abandoned on the rural hiking trail. Teasley was arrested five days later after he was tied to the crime through DNA found on Heike's shoe, and he was located on a criminal database due to his previous convictions. In a 300-page police report into the investigation released in 2025, it was claimed that Teasley had never met Heike before, but attacked her at-random because he was struggling with his gender identity and wanted to be a woman. The killer wrote in his diary before the murder that he was 'battling with my gender identity and sexuality', and he felt it was wrong because he was 'Christian, so this isn’t allowed.' 'I want to live a life of serving god, but how can I with these and other sins in the way. Ik (I know) I am forgiven for my sins.
