I don't think that's true. Let's take Alibaba as an example, the home page of Alibaba has some menu which pops up on cursor hover, if you cross to another menu, the menu switches. You have to move horizontally to that sub menu

I love small details. This is one of the smallest details I have ever seen suggested. I was thinking in the web you’d need to track the mouse pointer motion, but you could probably set it with two triangles with the :before & :after on hover
