The hit 1978 rock song
The hit 1978 rock song "Double Vision" by Foreigner was inspired by a televised New York Rangers hockey game where goaltender John Davidson took a hit to the head and announcers repeatedly stated he had "double vision". Origin and Inspiration The Hockey Game: While recording their second album in New York City in 1978, band members Mick Jones and Lou Gramm were watching a game featuring the New York Rangers. The Catchphrase: Goalie JohnDavidson was knocked down during play, and broadcasters mentioned on-air that he was suffering from "double vision". The Spark: Vocalist Lou Gramm was struggling to find a catchy chorus hook at the time; hearing the phrase provided the immediate spark for the track's title and lyrics. Release and Success Release Date: Released as a single in September 1978, following the June 1978 release of their smash sophomore album of the same name. Chart Performance: Peaked at No. 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and reached the top 10 in Canada and South Africa. Cultural Interpretation: While many listeners assumed the song was a nod to drug or alcohol-induced disorientation, the band clarified it was purely inspired by the sports broadcast terminology.
