Turning our 40ft bus into a tiny home | Part 2 🚌✨ Just to clear up a few FAQs we got after our first couple of videos: “Why did you remove all the bus seats just to install more seats?”
The original bus seats didn’t have seatbelts, so we needed to install new seats with seatbelts and have them signed off by an engineer as roadworthy before we could take the bus over the pits. “So you had to pass two inspections?”
Kind of yeah 😅 The new seats needed to be approved by an engineer first so we could get the mod plate, and then the bus itself had to pass the pit inspection. In some cases an engineer may only need photos to sign off on a modification, but ours needed to be inspected. “Why were you so stressed about the pit inspection?”
Apart from every reinspection costing us close to another $200, there’s always the chance you get a different inspector next time who picks up something else. Our biggest fear was ending up in a never ending cycle of fixing things and going back over the pits. “Why bother registering it now?”
We wanted to know right at the beginning if there were any major issues with the bus or engine before we sunk a whole lotta money and time into the actual conversion. “Why register it as a panel van instead of waiting until it’s finished and registering it as a motorhome?”
We already know we’ll need to drive the bus a few times while we’re building it, so getting it registered now means we can actually drive and insure it properly while we work on the conversion. “So is it officially a motorhome now?”
Not yet, once the build is finished, there’ll be another process to have it registered as a motorhome. Now that all of that is finally out of the way, we can actually start turning this thing into a home 🙌 Thanks for joining us on the journey!
