@ibrahim_jiyah: Part 3: The story behind the poem; Abd Yaghuth went to battle as the leader of his people against Banu Tamim. His forces were eventually defeated, and he was captured by the enemy. Because of the fighting and the death of an important man on the opposing side, his captors decided that he would be killed. Knowing that death was coming, Abd Yaghuth composed “Ala La Talumani”—not as a celebration of victory, but as a farewell and lament for himself. He remembered his companions, his homeland, his former strength as a warrior, and the life he was about to lose. According to the traditional accounts, he eventually chose a dignified death and was killed by having his akhal vein cut, causing him to bleed to death. The poem therefore became one of the most famous examples of self-elegy (rithāʾ al-nafs) in pre-Islamic Arabic poetry. Traditional sources place his death around 584 CE. The powerful part of the story is that he was a leader and warrior who had spent his life protecting his people, but his final words were spoken as a prisoner facing certain death. That’s why the opening—“Ala la talumani…”—has such a sorrowful and emotional meaning: he is essentially saying that there is no point blaming or reproaching him anymore; he is already suffering enough. #translation #translationlearning #nasheedislamic
