@theeredit: New episode Wednesday is a heavy one but something that isn’t talked about enough in the nursing world. Grab your tissues. #nurse #nursing #podcast #nursetok #nurses @Caitlin ER RN 🤍 @Karlie Tooley | Nurse | Mom
I am an L&D nurse and have had patients have stillbirths while I am the same gestation as them. It’s totally impossible to explain the compartmentalization that goes on in healthcare to anyone who hasn’t been in it themselves ❤️

I compartmentalized death so hard, I don’t process death of my friends and family. I mentally 🤷♀️and move on. My therapist is very concerned about it.

Every peds trauma is your kid. They haunt me. The adult casualties are sad and devastating but the peds ones are the absolute worst.

Had to do the same things many times in the NICU. Grateful though we had a unit and organization where a chaplain/social worker was offered, but at the same time still needing to pick back up for your other patients and families

A nursing career is one traumatic moment after the next and…… nobody knows. They think they have any clue. They don’t

an infant cpr was the first code I ever witnessed working in the hospital. this baby also did not make it and hearing the moms screams was something I can NEVER forget. For the rest of the time I worked at that hospital I never looked at that trauma bay the same.

My husband did CPR on a 6 month old (volunteer firefighter) while we had a 4 month old at home. It was negligence on the family and unsafe sleep but it forever changed him. He just came home and wouldn’t put our youngest down.

My daughter was telling me someone committed 💀 at her husbands job and they were told there would be grief counseling on site etc. I’m thinking that’s so nice, I also had a young man commit 💀that day and what I got was another call.

A patient that sticks with me to this day: working in an adult ER with a separate connected peds ER. we had a transfer coming in for a “stable” pregnant patient. she ended up delivering en route. Baby came in with CPR in progress and mom wasn’t doing well. She ended up being diagnosed with HELLP and DIC. Peds came over and they worked baby right next to us. Baby didn’t make it. We heard them call it while still working on mom. We worked so hard on mom and she made it to the ICU and was discharged from the hospital eventually by some miracle. It was the first time I saw an infant death. And I was very very pregnant with my first baby at the time. What a mess of emotions after that case. I think about that patient and her little baby often.

I did high risk OB for 5 years and I accidentally discovered an IUFD on one of my patients while I was 30ish weeks pregnant myself. The sinking feeling of not being able to find her baby's heartbeat after chatting about how excited we both were to welcome our babies in the world. I will never forget that.

i’ve been a PCU nurse for 8 months. i’ve had so much death and it’s been awful. i’ve had 2 right at the beginning of my shift who passed within hours of us sending them to the unit. both times i had to gather myself and start my morning because there were patients who had no idea and who needed their meds

The first baby death I seen was a 6 mo old come in with rig already set in and nurses and Drs were still trying to revive, paramedics said mother was a16 yr old and nobody came in with the baby, the mother told them she didn't check on baby for over 12 hrs while baby was supposedly sleeping. there were like 4 other adults in house and not one checked on him... all the nurses were crying, I burst into tears thinking hard because my granddaughters were both the same age as this poor baby

I was working in the ER (the same one my daughter died in when she was 2.5 years old five years prior) a fellow coworkers child was brought in from an accident and she came in to see the dads face knowing her child was gone and the scream she let out, I suddenly flashed back to me being delivered the news and making the same sound it’s a sound engraved in your brain and I knew then I needed to dust off my accounting degree because I was done. (I am not a nurse I was a HUC)

Superheroes. Nurses are so under appreciated for all that you have to see and do and then just move to the next patient and still give them your best….its impossible, yet you all do exactly that every shift.

Jenny | Nurse | Farm Life :
I recently had to be there when neurosurgery had to tell a patients 18 and 19 year old kids with no other family that their moms brain bleed was non survivable. The patient was the same age as my husband which is just a few years older than me and my daughter is 20. I felt like I was watching my daughter in that room. I had to walk out and be screamed at by a patient (mind you still in a trauma bay) that they were leaving if I didn’t get them their ice chips 😡 my head space definitely wasn’t a good one for the rest of that shift.

Everytime we get a pedi code i go and make sure there is nobody who needs to tap out. I have replaced several pregnant colleagues or new mothers out during a baby code.
