IN 1876, PEOPLE IN KENTUCKY REPORTED CHUNKS OF RAW FLESH FALLING FROM A CLEAR SKY. THEN SCIENTISTS ACTUALLY EXAMINED THE PIECES. On March 3, 1876, Rebecca Crouch was outside near Olympia Springs in Bath County, Kentucky, when pieces of what appeared to be meat began falling around her. This isn’t just a modern internet legend. Newspapers reported it at the time, specimens were collected, and the strange event was discussed in contemporary scientific publications. The Library of Congress still uses the surviving newspaper reports as historical primary sources. And apparently somebody decided the obvious next move was to taste it. Contemporary reports said two men sampled pieces and thought they resembled mutton or venison. Microscopic examinations later described samples containing animal tissues including muscle, lung and cartilage. So what happened? One of the strongest historical explanations is almost as bizarre as the mystery itself: vultures. Vultures can regurgitate their stomach contents when frightened or trying to lighten themselves for flight. A physician writing in 1876 proposed that a flock flying overhead may have disgorged partially digested carrion. Scientific American later revisited the explanation and described it as plausible. But nobody conclusively established exactly what happened. And yes a specimen believed to come from the original event still survives. Bath County even celebrated the event’s 150th anniversary in 2026. Forget where it came from for a second: would YOU have been brave enough to taste mystery meat that fell from the sky? #LavishExplorations #KentuckyMeatShower #BizarreHistory #HistoryMystery #StrangeButTrue
