@abbeyskitchen: Should you weigh your food in front of your kids? It all depends on how it’s modelled, and the language used. If you want to learn more about how to talk to kids about food and their body (aka raising kids with a healthy relationship with food!), I have a 60 min webinar with scripts, tips, and lots of actionable advice. Check it out in my bio! #feedingkids #parenting #mom #nutrition #dietitian
My daughter and the kids I nanny hear me and their parents explain “ no food is good or bad, but some foods fuel us better than others. “

do you think it would be okay to say something like "you know how your body tells you when you're hungry, and when to stop eating? when mommy was little, i was taught to ingore those feelings, so now that i'm grown up i have to learn how to feel them again. so i'm measuring my food, so my tummy can learn to recognize how much food it's eaten."? (i do not have kids lol)

I am trying to lose weight and recently went out to dinner with my niece. I had ordered a Coke Zero, and she asked me what the “zero” meant. I said it was because it did not have sugar. When she asked me why I specifically ordered a drink without sugar (she has a HUGE sweet tooth), I told her it was because I had had a sugary drink earlier in the day and wanted to have a drink lower in sugar with dinner for balance. She accepted the response and drank her regular sprite happily!

I heard my friend tell her kid that she weighs it to make sure her recipe tastes perfect like when they bake cakes together and I thought that was so smart

What are ways to approach it with teen athletes? Letting them know that different foods are going to fuel them for games and workouts better than others without moralizing or demonizing certain foods.

I have an ED, i do not make it a thing in front of my kids. If I do not eat something I just say "I don't feel like this meal today" and move on.

Hi, It’s Lucee :
I tell my sister that I measure my food cause I go to the gym and if I don’t eat enough protein then my muscles won’t grow but since she doesn’t go to the gym she doesn’t need to 🤷♀️

To be fair - she did say she’s weighing it to make sure she’s eating “enough food” not the “right amount of food”

the lesson of "different people need different tools for different reasons" that you mentioned is also good in many other scenarios for kids to know! that way if they see someone using a disability aid of any kind it can make sense for them easily

My sister in law has a thyroid problem and is also diabetic, alongside some other health issues. As a result her food is extremely monitored, everything is weighed, calculated, etc. I sat her down about a year ago and told her she had to explain to her two young daughters why she was doing it. She didn't even really see what I was trying to allude to until I had to spell it out for her. This is such vital advice and I will def be sending her this video

I tell my 6 yr old that no food is healthy or unhealthy … it’s the amount of it that we eat that makes it unhealthy or healthy. E.g chocolate gives us fats and sugar but too much can make you sick but it is just as important as broccoli, we just don’t have to eat as much chocolate to get the benefits. Very simplistic but it was hurting my heart hearing him say condemn certain food groups.

I didn’t listen to my body when I was your age and I messed up my internal cues. I’m trying to relearn what my body needs. Until then, I sometimes weigh food to be sure I have enough of what I need. Right now that’s protein cause I don’t naturally love it but I know my body needs it.

My brother in law has crazy food anxiety and won’t eat a lot of foods. His wife is a body builder and eats her own food and weighs it… their 10 year old daughter already has body image issues

I would add though, if the kiddo is neurodivergent we don’t always have the ability to know when we should be hungry. I have never really gotten the “hunger signals” until I haven’t eaten all day and I start to get nauseous. So I developed timer systems at time that are typical eating times so I know I should put something in my body…and a scale helps because I won’t eat enough because I don’t have those cues.
