I started with correcting myself like a dog 😂 if I said “ugh I’m so stupid” after a small mistake, I’d say “no. I’m NOT stupid.” Then move on and fix whatever mistake I made. Or sarcastically complimenting myself. It didn’t feel vain that way. My brain needed to hear the words, the tone didn’t matter. That helped me just say it normally and actually mean it over time. The sarcasm slowly tapered off. I also started saying things to other people that I needed to hear myself. I heard the words out loud and I meant them more when I said them to other people, I just chose my words more meticulously than I normally did. I complimented things intentionally that people normally don’t notice.

Most evening I take a moment to reflect on what I accomplished that day. It’s almost always more tasks than I thought. Years ago when my husband died, I would write in shorthand on a calendar all the tasks I completed. There was so so so so much to do. Some days all that kept me going was looking at that calendar & seeing black ink on every day. After months I looked up and thought “I can see a small crack through this mountain” months after that I realized there were now clear patches. If. It hadn’t been for that calendar ink, I would have given up

A thing is, the universe said congratulations! For what you had just done. Maybe better to celebrate an attitude or a completion rather than the concrete result we were working toward? Congratulations on getting there, allowing yourself to hope and communicating beautifully after that, they probably already had somebody for the job or didn’t actually have a job or all the rest of those things that are not within your control. Congratulations on a very cool account.

I never read the book, but I lived with somebody who did. Infinite Jest. In it, he talks at length about living not day by day, but if that’s too hard, you break it down moment by moment, and if that’s too hard, you break it down second by second. This is how he lived through difficult times. That is one of my strategies. If something is very difficult, if something very difficult is going on around me, I tell myself this will be over soon, every moment is a moment I have lived through. Every second is a second I have lived through. I also use your strategy. I also believe in breaking things down into smaller portions because it is easier for victims like me to swallow. We don’t do grandiose leaps. I might not think in terms of Dr degrees. But I might think in terms of a certificate. Then many certificates could turn into “Hey I like going to school”. It’s a pattern you develop after you’ve given yourself permission to take little steps. It’s a mindset. A positive progressive mindset.
